Paid social ads are often the first thing a gym or studio tries when classes look thin. They can work: a good offer shown to the right local audience brings enquiries quickly. The problem is that the enquiries usually stop the day the budget stops. The gyms that stay full tend to combine ads with something that keeps working on its own: a local community.
1. Be easy to find when people search
People looking for a gym search things like "gym near me", "spin class Nottingham" or "personal trainer West Bridgford". Make sure your Google Business Profile is complete, lists your classes and opening hours, and has recent photos of real sessions. This is free, and it brings in people who are already looking.
2. Make the first visit low-risk
A clear intro offer, such as a free first class, a discounted first week or a "bring a friend" session, removes the biggest barrier: nerves about walking in. Put the offer on your website, your Google profile and your social pages so it's the same everywhere.
3. Turn members into your marketing
Happy members already talk about their gym. Give them a reason and a simple way to bring friends: a referral reward, a monthly bring-a-friend class, or a member spotlight on your socials (with their permission). A recommendation from a friend is far more convincing than an ad.
4. Show real classes, not stock photos
Short clips of real sessions, real coaches and real members (again, with permission) show people what to expect and that your classes are welcoming. Post consistently, even if it's only two or three times a week.
5. Partner with local businesses
Physios, sports shops, cafés and workplaces near you share your audience. A simple partnership, such as a discount for their staff or customers, or a joint event, puts you in front of people who live and work nearby.
6. Reply fast
An enquiry is at its warmest the moment it arrives. Replying within the hour, rather than the next day, makes a real difference to how many people actually book. Set up quick replies on Instagram and Facebook, and check messages at set times each day.
Where ads still fit: once the basics above are in place, ads become much more effective, because people who click through find a complete profile, a clear offer and an active community. Ads then amplify what's already working.
